I'm very new to IRAF and need to remove Cosmic Ray hits from my spectra (all spectra are saved as .fits files and therefore come in both 1 and 2 dimensions, with various amounts of sky subtraction, but I'm sure this is a well known aspect to all you experienced IRAF users).
- I have found the task xzap but have yet to produce a single cleaned spectra, even after messing with the parameters.
- I have been told L.A.Cosmic is useful, but I have no idea how to download it (I'm also new to Linux...)
- Would it be easier to remove Cosmic Rays from 1D or 2D spectra?
I'm in need of serious help. Anything would be appreciated right now...
Thanks a lot.

I'm not that familiar with XZAP but there are some links to get you started with LACOSMIC:
http://www.astro.wisc.edu/~cigan/reducing/lacos/lacos.html
http://www.astro.yale.edu/dokkum/lacosmic/notes.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4fkRrWHCFY
The last link is a video tutorial but note that in IRAF v2.16 installing STSDAS is a simple matter of doing:
PHP Formatted Code
% cd $iraf/extern
% ./configure # needed only once
% make stsdas
The LACOSMIC code would need to be installed manually as described in the other links. See also the CRUTIL package under IMRED in the core system (do "cl\$this->_split2($m[0]) help overview" after loading the package for additional help).
