Just to let people know that there are RPM's for iraf on Mageia Linux, and iraf will be an officially supported package for the upcoming release of Mageia Linux. There are also RPM's for Redhat Fedora and work on debian, and you can get to those through the Fedora astronomy SIG.

One thing that I'm working on with Mageia is a Mac OSX virtual machine that you can unpack and be able to run linux apps on MacOSX. It's not that useful for IRAF since there is already a mac port, but might be useful for other astronomy packages which Mageia also supports.

Are the 64-bit problems with the RPM distribution fixed or is this a 32-bit only system?

We are generating RPMS for both 64 and 32 bit systems. There are problems with 64-bit on Debian, but the 64-bit on Mageia and Fedora seems to work fine. There is also a ton of black-magic that we had to put in to get everything to work. Also the RPM's basically rip out anything that is already provided by the system.

There are some bugs that we are looking into but the system seems to be usable...

I'm going to try to integrate the 2.16.1 changes. One reason I was wondering about github is that my work has been on github so are, so if there is an official github it would make it easier to integrate patches.
