I get an error message when I try to use splot or implot
"ERROR: No entry in device capability file (xgterm)".
I'm using pc-iraf revision 2.13 with Ubuntu 8.04 Linux.
I've been using IRAF on this HP laptop for 2 years without
any problems. I didn't intentionally make any changes to
IRAF except installing Ubuntu updates and my login.cl and
graphcap files look OK.

The default terminal type is set in your login.cl and created when you first do a MKIRAF, you might try rerunning the MKIRAF to reset the terminal type. Otherwise, you see that message when the graphics device being opened doesn't exist, e.g. the SPLOT 'device' parameter names a device that doesn't exist, or the 'graphcap' environment variable names a file other than 'dev$graphcap'. A MKIRAF can also reinitialize your uparm directory in case parameters were somehow reset, do a "show graphcap" to see what file is being used and verify there is an xgterm entry in there.-Mike

I checked all of your suggestions.
There was a "stty xgterm" in login.cl
'graphcap' points to the correct location
show graphcap yields ~/iraf/dev/graphcap
There is a graphcap file in dev
There is an xgterm entry in graphcap
splot has an entry graphic = stdgraph
show stdgraph yields xgterm
I still got the same error message.I then ran mkiraf as suggested but splot gives
the same error message.
