hey, it's me again..
hope you all don't mind i asked a few question again.. i have a problem in displaying image from HST data. the data is compressed in .gz format, and i already have it unzip using gunzip. when i want to displaying it under cl task, the file cannot be opened. but when i try to displaying the data straight with ds9, it can appear.
i just wanna know, why is that happening?
and for one who have taking a data from hst --> is it the extension of the data are not include in the file name when you have uncompressed it?thank you for the answer.. i really appreciate..
best regard..

DS9 physically opens the image to determine what type of file it is, IRAF relies on the filename extension to use the appropriate image kernel. If the filenames have no extension but you know they are e.g. FITS files, you can add an extension automatically using[code:1:d864eb1504]cl> rename foo* fits field=extn[/code:1:d864eb1504]You should then be able to use DISPLAY (or MSCDISPLAY for multi-extension files) to display the image.-Mike

thanks for your suggestion, but it seems that way didn't work.
when i read about the explanation about the data type on the HST Data Handbook, there are 2 kind of data type, a GEIS and FITS file. how can i check the data type from the hst that i acquired in iraf/stsdas? because it's confusing me...a lot. i can do nothing about it before i know what kind of this data type? i can't analyze it, or display it, or anything else.
please help me..

Define "didn't work". Did the '.fits' extension get put on the filename? Was there an error message of some kind when you tried to display it?Chances are you have a FITS file, GEIS files have extensions like ".hhh' and '.c0h'. Somehow page the file, if it begins with "SIMPLE = T" then it is FITS.

i'm sorry..
didn't work means that the file extension was not change or adding .fits at all. so, i bagen to read the manual on Data Handbook. i found that, my data was somekind of FITS type called Multi-Extension FITS. and i tried to followed the step on that handbook. but then again, when i tried to display using this task like this example:
[code:1:934200f801]tv> display fname.fits[11] 1 (FITS extension 11)[/code:1:934200f801]
i've got this message:
[quote:934200f801]tv> display o5ax01010_x1d.fits [1]
ERROR: may not convert string to other types[/quote:934200f801]so, what i'm suppose to do to get this problem fixed??
thanks again for your help...
best regard,

There is no space between the 'foo.fits' and '[1]' to specify the extension number.

mr/mrs fitz, the problem still can not be solved.
i have followed your suggestion, no space between the '[1]' . but, i still can not open the image..
[code:1:9120da3459]tv> display o5ax01010_x2d.fits[sci,1]
ERROR: Cannot open image (o5ax01010_x2d.fits[1])[/code:1:9120da3459]
any other suggestion?

Try without the 'sci' extension name and just specify the number. Otherwise, you said the RENAME didn't add a .fits extension, did you do it yourself some other way (i.e. the image can't be opened because there isnt' a file called 'o5ax01010_x2d.fits', just 'o5ax01010_x2d').
