Hello,I have a problem with DS9 v5.2 (on FC9). When I display an image form IRAF, the scale menu is no longer disabled (it was disabled until v5.1), but when I try to change the image scaling, it takes forever (and lots of memory and CPU resources) and at the end the image is no longer displayed properly. Even more, none of the scale options would work any more. It is not related to the image size because the image is quite small. I also tried FC9's updated v5.2-2 and SAO's v5.3 beta, but I have the same problem. The problem disappears if I open the same image from DS9.There is no problem with DS9 v5.1 simply because when image is displayed from IRAF the scale menu gets disabled automatically.I guess this is a bug?/Vallery

A beta 5.3 release is available, you should see whether this has already been fixed and if not, report it to SAO. The Scale menu *should* be disabled when displaying an image from IRAF.-Mike

I can verify that in v5.3beta on a Mac the scale menu is once again disabled when displaying from IRAF, and that scaling the brightness/contrast using the mouse appears to work as expected. I don't have access to an FC9 system to test things directly, but you might try getting the newer binary to see if it helps. Is your problem with the scale menu button, or changing the brightness/contrast scaling with the mouse? -Mike

Thank you for such quick response

When displaying from IRAF, the 'scale' button is supposed to be disabled because the image scaling (i.e. converting the full dynamic range of the image to the 8-bit display range) is done in IRAF. When displaying a FITS file from ds9 directly, it is ds9 that does the scaling and provides a number of different methods (e.g. the iraf z-scale algorithm, histogram percentages, etc), but these options wouldn't make sense when using a client like IRAF to display the image. So it doesn't sound like there is a problem. In the original post, there was a separate complaint that brightness/contrast scaling (which is different than the 'scale' button) was taking too long, this all happens entirely within ds9.-Mike
