Hi,
I just installed IRAF and ds9 on my Ubuntu desktop and starting to learn how to use it.
So far, I have too little data from by own obs, so I can't try much for real.
Does anyone know how to find small, "sample" FITS files to play with? (I do ordinary photometry and will try to do some crowded field work as well.)
What do you use when teaching IRAF to students?David

Real data can be found various places on the net, mostly in archives. For simply beginning to play with data you can make your own using the ARTDATA package, see esp the MKEXAMPLES task. If you want FITS files the be sure to do a "cl> reset imtype = fits" before running tasks.Otherwise, you can see the Exercises developed long ago for v2.11 fromftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/misc/exer211.readme
ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/misc/exer211.tar.ZThese haven't been updated in a while, but do contain sample data.Cheers,
-Mike
