Howdy All:I am running IRAF on a G5 MAC OSX 10.4.10 and have run into some problems with the IRAF imexamine package interfacing with DS9. Specifically, when I try to get radial profiles with the "r" cursor it generates lines of gibberish (no additional window is opened). I tried setting the terminal type to xgterm but that did not work. Any ideas? Thanks, David

Setting the terminal type to xgterm only works when you're actually using an XGterm window to run IRAF. Garbage on the screen is always either a mismatch in the terminal type, or usually using a non-graphics terminal (e.g. Terminal.app)-Mike

Thanks Fitz!I fixed the terminal issue and the "r" button gives me a radial profile in a new window labeled "tektronix"(Tek). Unfortunately there are no numbers or labels on the graph, merely empty boxes. Any ideas? Thanks, David
PS...I have a very odd problem involving imcombine as well...when I median combine three images taken through an H-alpha filter (T2KA chip from 1993) I get a lovely final image, however when I repeat the same exact operation with three images of the same field taken the same night through an SII filter I get tons of cosmic rays in the final image. This makes absolutely no sense to me

Never mind about the median combine issue...one of the images was probably taken under more hazy conditions so the modes were off even though the exposure times were identical. Still curious about the label issue for imexamine.David

[/quote:786089454b]I believe this has been fixed in a recent update of X11, at least I don't see it any more on an Intel box. In any case, it is/was a known bug in the pple X server, see e.g. http://lists.apple.com/archives/x11-users/2006/Feb/msg00081.html There is no workaround that I know of.-Mike

Hi Mike,I am having the similiar problem for displaying radial plots from imexamine in my xterm runnung on PC-IRAF 2.12.2 on Fedora 6 i386.I see Garbage on the screen when I press "r" and I think I am having a mismatch in the terminal type. So how can I reset the right terminal type? Or if xgterm is work, how can I get it (put the binary file to where?) and set it?I am looking forward for your reply, thanks a lot.Regards,

The default terminal type is set is your login.cl and created when you first do a MKIRAF. If you truly are running an xterm window (and not something like a gnome-terminal that cannot do graphics at all), then when prompted for the terminal type enter 'xtermjh' (to put the status line on the text window) or 'xterm'. You can reset this anytime on the command-line using[code:1:a4da41450b]cl> stty xtermjh[/code:1:a4da41450b]Using XGterm is the same: Start up the xgterm window (you can get the binary from the Downloads area and install it someplace like /usr/local/bin)
but use 'xgterm' as the terminal type when doing an 'stty' or MKIRAF.
Cheers,
-Mike
