I got a problem when I try to use DS9 to display images.
I have installed CIAO in my Fedora Core 5 and there is ds9 included in it. So when I have to use ds9, I have to start CIAO first.
Then I installed iraf on the same machine and try to use ds9 as the display device for iraf. However, I got the following error message:
ecl > display crfree.hhh
ERROR: Cannot open device (node!imtool,,512,512)
no matter I open the ds9 or not. Would anyone please offer some help ?

HiI run FC4. If you run IRAF, with ds9 installed in your extern directory, with the correct links. I.e you can start ds9 from anywhere. then al you need to do is start-up ds9 before you start iraf. The best method is to call it from your loginuser.cl file.
[code:1:fb13b849ee]# Start ds9
!ds9
[/code:1:fb13b849ee]Hope this helps.Regards

If it will not help you, can you show us your login.cl?
Here is my piece of ligin.cl and i not have a problem with DS9:
[code:1:bfc0190a17]
# Uncomment and edit to change the defaults.
#set editor = vi
#set printer = lp
#set pspage = "letter"
#set stdimage = imt800
#set stdimcur = stdimage
#set stdplot = lw
#set clobber = no
#set filewait = yes
#set cmbuflen = 512000
#set min_lenuserarea = 64000
set imtype = "fits"
set imextn = "oif:imh fxf:fits,fit,fts plf:pl qpf:qp stf:hhh,??h"
[/code:1:bfc0190a17]Good luck!

I have solved the problem
It is due to my $display variable in iraf account.
I have to set permission on iraf account in order to use display
In addition, i have to add this line to the login.cl in order to use ds9 in iraf:
task $ds9 = "foreign"
I don't know why this works, but at least now I can use ds9 to display images now
