Hi all,I am new to IRAF and need to do some data reduction.I'd like to display my images using ds9 but I don't know how to launch it.When I type ds9 & in the cl> it reads: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable. So how do I run ds9?Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi, I would like to suggest to use cl>! /yourpath/ds9 &
however the executable files should be place in the /iraf/x1iraf/bin.xxx (xxx is your system architecture) directory.
Hope this could help.Alemaitan

Alemaitan has a point (and my thanks for posting a reply!) that in some cases the complete path is required, however in this case the error doesn't indicate a path problem. DS9 is a host program that requires that X be running, on systems like OSX and Cygwin starting X is a separate step from the normal user login, under other systems it is the default windowing system. If you're sure that X is running, simply type 'ds9' to start the program. The message about the DISPLAY variable could be a side-effect of the way you're starting it, i.e. from within the CL. In that case the 'ds9' command or ! escape executes as a shell escape meaning that environment variables like DISPLAY, PATH, etc must be defined in your .cshrc/.bashrc file to be found since the .login definitions aren't inherited. If everything is running on your machine (i.e. no remote logins) then a definition likesetenv DISPLAY :0.0should be all you need. You can put the binary in the X11IRAF tree as long as that is defined in your PATH as well, most times it is just put in /usr/local/bin or some other public dir.Cheers,
-Mike
