Maybe this is a question for the boys & girls at STScI, but my reading of the
"igi" help pages makes me suspect that whoever wrote this was just unfamiliar with iraf command syntax. (They were certainly unfamiliar with how to construct a useful help pages...the parameters are buried down around line
100...)javascript:emoticon('Rolling Eyes')I'd like to run several igi plot files, and put the metacode output together
so I can display the plots all at the same time.
On this topic, the "igi" help page says: (device = "stdgraph") [device name]
The output graphics device. If device = "file", the graphics
output is stored in the file specified by the parameter
`metacode'. (metacode = "") [file name]
The name of an output binary GKI metacode file. This is
required if device = "file". (append = no) [boolean]
Append to existing graphics? This may be used to run igi
several times but plot to the same frame (page) or combine igi
graphics with plots from other IRAF/STSDAS tasks. Use the
ERASE task to create a new frame, even with append=yes. If appending graphics to a metacode file you must also use ">>G
file" rather than "device=file". Using "append=yes" also
permits creating a single file if you are creating a PostScript
output file. If you also wish to create a new page but use a
single file, use the ERASE command. This will not actually
erase existing graphics from any non-interactive (hard copy)
graphics output.
So, I inferred from this thatigi < file1.com device=">>G file" metacod="testmeta" append+
igi < file2.com device=">>G file" metacod="testmeta" append+would work. But it doesn't. javascript:emoticon('')
Instead, upon executing the 2nd line, it tells me that
the operation would overwrite an existing file (testmeta).I've tried doing this by removing the space in ">>G file"
I've also tried just leaving device="file" and fiddling with things like
metacod=">>testmta". Same error message. So, how do I append the 2nd plot to the first? javascript:emoticon('Confused')thanks,
phil

Hi Phil,The '>>G' is a CL level redirection, try something like[code:1:48af29b0a6]cl> igi < file1.com device="stdgraph" append+ >>G my.metacode[/code:1:48af29b0a6]similar to the way you would redirect/append text output onto a file. Can't comment on the ST help pages, not listing params at the top is their standard format but [code:1:48af29b0a6]cl> help igi secton=parameters[/code:1:48af29b0a6]should always bring you right to it. Hope this helps.Cheers,
-Mike
