Hello,
I was hoping someone could help me with my tfinder problems. I have installed tfinder and tables.. everything seemed to go smoothly during that process. However, now I'm at the point where I'd like to try to get a plate solutiong and the tfinder task is giving the following error message:Searching the Guide Star Catalog index...Reading the Guide Star Catalog regions:
/iraf/extern/gsc/s0000/4949.gsc
ERROR on line 272: Parameter not a legal character constant (datatype)
tfinder ()I have downloaded the GSC_ACT catalogue, and the path reported above is the correct location of the GSC file. The copy of the GSC_ACT that I downloaded was encoded in a binary format which needed to be decoded. Perhaps I did something wrong there? I did compile and run the decoder that came with the GSC_ACT catalogue. There are 2 formats it can decode to, I tried both of them on the file that iraf is telling me that it is reading from (4949.GSC) with no luck, so I'm not so sure that it's the catalogue data format that is the issue. I'm a newbie in IRAF, so I have a feeling I'm missing something basic. Any pointers would be appreciated, and any other information you would need I will be happy to collect and post. Thanks!Josh

What are the results of an "lpar tfinder" and "imhead <image> lo+"? What version of tables? Thanks!Rob Seaman

All of them are from 2002 (between Jul and Dec if I remember correctly). There were no replies to those posts. However, I did notice that the version of IRAF that I am running was built in July of 2002. Maybe this is a bug that was fixed in a newer version of IRAF and that's why I'm only seeing posts about this problem from back in 02?Thanks for any help you can provide.Josh

Josh[/quote:7c1118a7b8]We occasionally have seen problems when parameters in tables package tasks have changed. I don't think this is the problem here, although you may want to think about updating various of your software just from best practices. Our best guess is the version of the GSC catalog you are attempting to use. Finder only supports catalog input in the original format of the GSC. Look at the mkgsctab task, for instance. You may use any catalog you want as long as the entries are converted to the original GSC format. I suspect the more recent GSC-ACT catalog is simply not recognized in its native format. Take a look at mkgsctab and see if it does what you want.Rob Seaman
