Hi Mike,
Your help is really valuable and I think what I have should be
correct now. I have a couple more placement questions, though. Where do
I unpack imtoolcmap.tar? I've got it in /home/iraf/irafbin for now.
Also, where do I put the x11 stuff? I've plopped the man page *.ps
files in $iraf/local/mandocs and cdlref.ps.gz, cdl.tar.gz,
x11iraf-v1.3.1-bin.redhat.tar.gz in $iraf/local/download. The rest of
the directory structure is:*/home/iraf:*

Thanks, again, for your help.

install them as the default you would create a /usr/local/lib/imtoolcmap
directory and unpack the tar file in there, but ximtool will work
whether you install this or not.> Also, where do I put the x11 stuff? I've plopped the man page *.ps

(in your case) and unpack all the files there. There will then be
a /home/iraf/x11iraf/install script you can execute to install the
stuff on your machine, accepting all the default paths should be fine.
The various *.ps.Z files are conveniences for printing, once installed
a "man ximtool" should print the man page on the screen.> The rest of the directory structure is:

is where you'd normally put the X11IRAF stuff.> * /home/iraf/iraf:*

it is and it will be correct, e.g. "tar -zxpf as.pcix.gen.gz" while logged
in as the 'iraf' user.> * /home/iraf/iraf/local:*

written with the one distributed in the system. That's fine, you won't

x11iraf-v1.3.1-bin.redhat.tar.gz This is fine, the download directory can be anything convenient for
you.> * /home/iraf/iraf/local/mandocs:*

as a convenience for printing but aren't used in the runtime system.> * /home/iraf/irafbin:*

are correct.> * /home/iraf/irafbin/bin.redhat:*

you should be all set. You can delete the .gz file once you're done.> I've done the gunzip and tar -xvf of the as, ib, and nb stuff and

files, assuming you use the suggested directory structure. It looks like
you've already done that so there's nothing to be done in that section.
Once everything is unpacked it's pretty much just a matter of running the
/home/iraf/iraf/unix/hlib/install script as described. Remember that your
"iraf root directory" is /home/iraf/iraf, when you run the install script
as 'root' you may need to first type 'csh' to start a C-shell so the
various source/setenv commands in the install guide will work.
Hope this helps, write back if you still have questions.Cheers,
-Mike
