Hello,
We would like to use IRAF + XIRAF and stsdas on Linux DEBIAN.
we cheked the site http://iraf.noao.edu/

And it seems that we must try to compile from the source, since the only
distro is RedHat.
Do you know if this is possible to do this on debian 3.1
[ Sarge stable release ] ?

If yes, where could we get the source ?

thank you very much.

We don't have a separate distribution for Debian but in most cases the existing 'linux' architecture binaries will work just fine. For things like STSDAS you can build from source or chances are that the redhat binaries will also work provided you install them in a 'bin.linux' directory. The same applies to X11IRAF, be sure to get the latest versions. Post back if you have any problems.

Cheers,

I run into broken links...javascript:emoticon('Sad')

Sources are included in the distribution, specifically the 'AS'
files. You can get the latest from

ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v212/PCIX/patch2a/as.pcix.gen.gz
ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v212/PCIX/patch2a/ib.lnux.x86.gz
ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v212/PCIX/patch2a/nb.lnux.x86.gz

The 'rhux' files in that directory are the redhat binaries. Note that the system does not have (and likely never will unless somebody else provides one) the standard Debian configure/makefile scheme for building from sources. The procedure for doing a "sysgen" is outlined in the Site Manager's Guide (unixsmg.ps.gz in the parent directory above),
however this shouldn't be necessary.
STSDAS likewise comes with source and is available from the ftp://ftp.stsci.edu/pub/software/stsdas directory. Note that the TABLES package is required to build STSDAS (and IRAF). I'd recommend getting the X11IRAF from

ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub/fitz/x11iraf-v1.3.2-XXXX.tar.gz

files. There is a 'x11iraf-new_gcc.tgz' file as well that fixes some problems in building using newer GCC versions, but try the binaries first.

This page describes how to setup IRAF on a Ubuntu/Debian machine. Apart from the exact commands, there are some instructions in square brackets that need to be followed. Installation of X11IRAF, DS9, Tables, and STSDAS are included.
