I'm running iraf 2.15.1a on a 64 bit MacBook Pro and trying to use tedit in the nttools package. When I try to add a column using the add column command in tedit, I can then type numerical values into the new column. However, when I exit tedit and then try to tread or tedit the table again, I get an error message - 'arithmetic exception', and cannot open the table. (Can't use tdump to dump it either).
Any thought?. Also, if I need to install patches, could you please point me to directions on how to do this. I've never installed iraf or patches myself.
Can you give me a more specific example of the column you're trying to add, e.g. what datatype, what values, etc. I tried a quick test under v2.16 and didn't have a problem. I can't remember this specifically being fixed but it may be part of general 64-bit fixes.
In general, updates to v2.15 require installing new binaries and a source patch. In v2.16 this is simplified to simply typing "make latest" in the iraf root directory, but upgrading from v2.15 to v2.16 requires a new installation. If you have the 'macosx' binaries installed for v2.15 you may find that these provide a workaround if you set IRAFARCH=macosx before logging in.
Sorry for the delayed reply. I can reproduce your problem using either .tab or .fits tables on the most recent IRAF, ascii tables seem to work fine. I'll let you know here when this is fixed, but the workaround for the moment is to install the TABLES package and use those 32-bit binaries to create/edit the table.
