Today there was a New York Times article "Data Analysts Captivated by R’s Power ". R is a very popular statistics program. I think of IRAF and R as being very similar style environments. I thought this might be of interest to some people here. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/07/technology/business-computing/07program.html

Thanks, that's interesting. I see R mentioned quite often but it sounds quite focused on stats so I haven't tried it yet.. It would be interesting to have a better feel for how it complements IRAF and Python.
