Hi David,
Msccmatch will work with single images. So you need to have an
initial WCS. Note that msccmatch is not a general matching method so
the assumption is that the WCS is off by a zero point shift, possibly
a small (~1deg) rotation and have some linear distortion.
In general many of the useful mscred tasks will work on single images
(mscdisplay, msczero, msccmatch, mscfinder, and mscimage are examples).
You are right that a general solution would involve imcoords
package. I just answered another similar question about ccxymatch.
This can do general solutions (much like the old FOCAS triangle match
routine) but it is a little sensitive to parameters.
I hope this helps.
Yours,
Frank

Hi Frank,
Thanks for the info---I had no idea mscred tasks would work on
individual images. Anyway, it looked like a more general solution
was required, so I trained my student to use imcoords. I really like
msccmatch's integration of detection+matching+fitting. A similar tool
with the generality of imcoords would be on my wish list.
Cheers,
Dave
