Hi, this is Glen Williams at Central Michigan University. We just
purchased a new PC workstation for running IRAF. The operating system
is the newest version of Fedora Linux. We are not able to get Imtool to
work, apparently because Fedora is 24-bit and Imtool is 8-bit. I am
told that you are working on a new version of Imtool that will be
24-bit. Do you have any suggestions on what we can do in the mean time
to get IRAF running? Is DS9 an option? Our computer person tells me
that DS9 could display the images, but he thinks that it runs
independently of IRAF. Thanks.

Hi Glen,
DS9 will work as a display server for IRAF in the same way that
XImtool will. The main difference is that DS9 doesn't make use of all f
the information IRAF sends during the display and so the pixel and WCS
readout you see are approximations. If you load the image into DS9
directly using the File menu you'll see the proper values and coords.
For 24-bit display this is your only option, I'll append some old notes
on using XImtool workarounds. Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Mike Fitzpatrick
