V2.14.1 Upgrade/Installation Instructions ========================================= To upgrade an existing IRAF installation, or to install IRAF V2.14.1 for the first time, start by identifying yourself as one of the following: 1.) I am installing for the FIRST TIME: - The AS, IB and NB distribution files contain the current V2.14.1 system. Install these files as described in the Installation Guide and you will have a current V2.14.1 system. 2.) I am updating an existing IRAF V2.14 system: Option 1: Do a complete re-installation of the system as described in the Installation Guide. Option 2; Re-install the IB and NB binary distributions AND apply the 'patch1.tar.gz' file to update the existing source tree. The patch file is available only for PC-IRAF systems, this is the first official release of the Sun/IRAF system and so a complete installation is required. 3.) I am updating a PRE-V2.14 IRAF system: - There is no upgrade for pre-V2.14 systems to this release. You are required to do a complete re-install of the system using the AS, IB and NB distribution files. Detailed installation instructions are available in the 'pciraf.ps.gz' (compressed PostScript) document for PC-IRAF systems, and the 'suniraf.ps.Z' document for Sun/IRAF systems. Questions with upgrades or installations may be directed to the forums at http://iraf.net ================================================================================ There are two ways to build a distribution from the files contained in these directories. PREBUILT BINARY DISTRIBUTIONS ----------------------------- The recommended way to create IRAF from the IRAF network archive is to obtain and install a binary distribution. Since this distribution contains precompiled binaries it is large and takes longer to retrieve from the archive, but once the distribution files have been obtained the installation is simple and relatively safe from errors. The binary distribution for each system is contained in a subdirectory such as PCIX or SSOL. All of the files needed to build IRAF on the given system will be contained in this directory or in subdirectories. Instructions for retrieving the files and performing the installation on a givel platform are given in the README file in the root directory. SOURCE-ONLY DISTRIBUTIONS ------------------------- The alternative to obtaining and installing a precompiled binary IRAF distribution is to obtain the system sources and compile the system yourself. This requires less material to be transferred over the network, but takes longer, is more prone to error, and leaves some doubt as to how well tested the resultant system will be (the executables you generate are not necessarily identical to those we tested when the binary distribution was prepared). IF A PREBUILT BINARY DISTRIBUTION IS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR SYSTEM, YOU SHOULD USE THAT. All the files you need to build IRAF from a source-only distribution will be found in the PORT subdirectory. Instructions are given in the README file in this directory. In short, you will need the HS file for the target system (the host system interface), and the IS.PORT.GEN and NS.PORT.GEN distribution files (IRAF and NOAO package sources). The latter two archive files (they are compressed UNIX TAR files) consist of some 7000 files, comprising the bulk of the IRAF distribution, and are identical in all IRAF installations. To build IRAF from the sources you will need to install all three files, and do an IRAF sysgen to compile and link the portable system. A source-only distribution (actually this includes the host level HSI binaries required for the IRAF sysgen) totals about 13 Mb, compared to 60-70 Mb for a full distribution, including binaries as well as sources. USER SUPPORT ------------ NOAO no longer maintains a general user support desk. However, community- supported forums and articles are hosted and active at http://iraf.net IRAF developers operate and regularly participate in the forums and offer the same, or better, support than was available in the old email-based system. Additionally, all the previous mail sent to the old iraf@noao.edu support address is available online and is now searchable. AND THATS NOT ALL... The main IRAF distribution is not all there is to IRAF. You may also want to obtain some of the "layered packages", or some of the contributed user programs available for installation in IRAF. Examples of layered packages are new IRAF packages still undergoing user testing before being installed in the standard distribution, and IRAF based software developed by outside groups, e.g., the STSDAS software from STScI, or the MSCRED package from NOAO. See /iraf/extern, /iraf/contrib, and /iraf/misc for layered software. Graphics software for use with IRAF, including XGterm and XImtool, will be found in /iraf/x11iraf.
