Good Morning,
Last week I found the bash shell in Windows 10 and have since been working on getting iraf to run correctly with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS that comes with Windows 10. I've been able to get xterm to run but xgterm gives me the error "cannot execute binary file: Exec format error.
I've installed iraf on multiple imacs and redhat machines with success but this one has stumped me. Any ideas on where I should look for solutions? Tried running the static version of xgterm to no avail.
Thanks in advance!
Bob

I'm not familiar with the Windows 10 system running Ubuntu at all, but my first guess would be that this is a 64-bit system and the Ubuntu side simply doesn't have any 32-bit compatibility libs installed. XGterm/XImtool are still 32-bit binaries and the 'cannot exec binary file' usually means you are trying to execute an unsupported binary format (e.g. like running a FreeBSD binary on a Linux system). A good place to start for what to install would be:

I was able to install all the 32bit libraries as detailed in the link provided but xgterm still didn't run. It looks like the "Windows Subsytem for Linux" (WSL) is supporting 64bit calls but it doesn't seem to support 32bit calls made through the Linux.
I know I haven't read all the documentation and the answer is probably out there but just in case someone is online and knows the answer, is there any movement towards porting xgterm / ximtool to a 64bit version?
Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't count on there being a 64-bit version of XGterm/XImtool (unless a very large check were to appear in my mail). The system is based on an old version of the XTerm code and some early X11 widget toolkits. With enough time and effort it would technically be possible to port the code to 64-bit, but realistically I would simply replace it (e.g. port only the GTerm graphics widget to a newer XTerm base and write-a-new/adopt-an-existing image display to better deal with remote data and large complex mosaics). XTerm should still be usable but isn't as pretty.
