I recently built a new xubuntu 16.04 system with the latest and greatest iraf binaries and had a string of failures. The biggest failure is this:

implot crashes xgterm when resizing the graphics window. if you run implot then grab the corner of the plot window to resize it, the plot window and xgterm windows both crash(killing iraf and all of your scripts). Also, using the resize option in the window menu would crash it. Eventually I just set the graphics widow size to something comfortable using the xgterm args, but after just a few graphics commands the graphics window would still just crash... again taking xgterm and iraf with it.. its like it has a limited life of how much work it can do. The errors it generates in every case are "X Error: BadDrawable", "X Error: BadPixmap", and a few others.
I switched to xterminal and redid my login.cl and everything works just fine... I could resize windows and issue lots of commands. so I'm certain that iraf itself is working... the problem seems to be isolated to x11iraf. Unfortunately xterminal and its graphics window wont work for most users though so I am in a rush to get xgterm/x11iraf working.

I'm assuming that this is all because there is some incompatibility with some new version of a lib or something... I tried grabbing the latest source code and compiling, but it doesn't build. apparently it uses some depreciated "varargs.h" header that the compiler complains about along with a few other things... I found some threads on this compiler issue dating back to 2005 so I thought a post might be in order.

Anyone else experience this? any ideas?

thanx,
CJ

I don't have an xubuntu 16.04 system to test/debug, but the window resizing problem has been seen at various times in the past and was caused by problems with the window manager and/or desktop system. The fix back then, was to open the system preferences panel and under some form of "Window" or "Window Behavior" panel (the name varied by platform/version) you needed to disable the option that would "Display content when resizing window". If indeed this is a library compatibility issue, and you did your own install of X11IRAF (or used a distribution not from NOAO), then try using the statically linked binary available at

ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub/fitz/xgterm.STATIC # and similar for 'ximtool.STATIC'

This is the same binary that comes with the stock IRAF v2.16.1 release and is installed on the system from the iraf$vendor/x11iraf/bin.linux directory. Note X11IRAF is a 32-bit binary but it doesn't sound like the errors are complaining about missing libraries on your 64-bit system.

Development of X11IRAF is essentially frozen due to the amount of work required to upgrade it to be 64-bit compatible as well as current with the recent X11 systems. XTerm is always the (ugly) fallback, it would be nice to be able to replace the XGterm graphics with something more modern at some point.

That seemed to fix a bunch of it! Thank You!!! there are still some issues that seem to be derived from me using a thin client and xrdp to connect to this box. Running standalone works fine, and using xrdp worked fine on an older version of fedora. I am going to try switching to pure X and see if the problem goes away.
