Hi everyone,

I am a complete beginner to IRAF, and I am trying to align some fits files using geomap and geotran.

I am running geomap right now, but it has been very slow until now. The output looks something like:

geomap @CoordList.txt database.coo 1. 2048. 1. 4096.

Coordinate list: Coords/Coords_0.coo Transform: Coords/Coords_0.coo
Results file:

d#r$L#r'Y$f'Y#r'Y"p'F550#r'Y#r+M$f+M#r+M"p*Z600#r+M#r/A$f/A#r/A"p.N650#r/A#r2U$f2U#r2U"p2B700#r2U#r6I$f6I#r6I"p5U750#r6I#r9\$f9\#r9\"p9I800#r9\#r;R#r;R&o;R&o;@&o;R)m;R)m;@)m;R,l;R,l;@,l;R/j;R/j;@/j;R2h;R2h;@2h;R3j;R#r$L&o$L&o$^&o$L&c"S1000&o$L)m$L)m$^)m$L)b"S1500)m$L,l$L,l$^,l$L,`"S2000,l$L/j$L/j$^/j$L.~"S2500/j$L2h$L2h$^2h$L1}"S30002h$L3j$L3j$L3j'Y2w'Y3j'Y3j+M2w+M3j+M3j/A2w/A3j/A3j2U2w2U3j2U3j6I2w6I3j6I3j9\2w9\3j9\3j;R!m-RX (in units)/a ]Y.j ] -s ](,| ]i,e ]n+n ] *w ]u*` ]n)i ]i(r ]t'| ]s'e ])7h$MNOAO/IRAF V2.14.1 tkupfer@prakash Wed 16:55:35 27-Jul-20166q$FGEOMAP: function = polynomial npts = 3 reject = 3. nrej = 05z$FX fit: xorder = 2 yorder = 2 xterms = half stdev = 0.5c$FY fit: xorder = 2 yorder = 2 xterms = half stdev = 0.3v&YCoords/Coords_0.coo: Coordinate TransformationJ'e;J'm;J'u;J'};J(d;J(l;J(t;J(|;J)d;J)k;J)s;J){;J*c;J*k;J*r;J*z;J+b;J+j;J+r;J+y;J,a;J,i;J,q;J,y;J-`;J-h;J-p;J-x;J.`;J.g;J.o;J.w;J.;J/g;J/n;J/v;J/~;J0f;J0n;J0v;J0};J1e;J1m;J1u;J1};J2d;J2l;J2t;J2|;J3d;J3j;J%m$L%m%O%m&_%m(O%m)_%m+N%m,^%m.N%m/^%m1N%m2^%m4N%m5^%m7N%m8^%m:N%m;R*g$L*g%O*g&_*g(O*g)_*g+N*g,^*g.N*g/^*g1N*g2^*g4N*g5^*g7N*g8^*g:N*g;R/b$L/b%O/b&_/b(O/b)_/b+N/b,^/b.N/b/^/b1N/b2^/b4N/b5^/b7N/b8^/b:N/b;R5j @X fit ok. and it's not changing at all. My coordinate list looks something like:

Coords/Coords_0.coo
Coords/Coords_1.coo
Coords/Coords_10.coo
Coords/Coords_11.coo
Coords/Coords_12.coo
Coords/Coords_13.coo
Coords/Coords_14.coo

One of my coordinate files looks something like (Xref, Yref, Xin, Yin) for 3 different stars:
512 1093 1338 861
814 583 1655 358
751 3104 1520 2881

Am I doing anything wrong?

The garbage output is plot metcode which tells me 1) you are running in interactive mode and 2) you are not using a graphics-compatible terminal like XTerm or XGterm (or you are but it have the wrong type set in IRAF). You can turn off the 'interactive' parameter to solve this if you accept the results right away, otherwise be sure you are NOT using a Terminal/iTerm window on OSX or something like a KTerm/rconsole/gnome-terminal/rxvt/etc under linux.

The graphics terminal type is set when you first do a MKIRAF or can be reset on the cmdline as something like

cl\$this->_split2($m[0]) stty xgterm
cl\$this->_split2($m[0]) stty xtermjh

for an XGterm or XTerm window respectively. Note, you MUST start these windows first and then login to the CL from them, setting the terminal type will not launch the actual terminal window. XGterm is distributed/installed as part of IRAF v2.16.1, XTerm should come standard with most Linux systems, on OSX you'll need to install XQuartz separately.
