I was doing photometry for a star cluster, with ds9 opened. When I ran daofind, the file image.coo.* appeared in the process but vanished when it ended, while den*.fits remained. And I got this "segmentation violation". I didn't find out what the problem was, so I tried closing ds9, and then daofind ran successfully. Please tell me where the problem is >_< The version of my iraf is v 2.16, and I use fedora 12. I know may have made some mistakes when installing iraf and ds9 as I am not familiar enough with linux and it took me several days to install iraf successfully, while there are still a lot of problems I don't know from where they originate.

A segmentation violation is a general error that can be caused by a bug in the code (e.g. a pointer reference out of bounds) or some combination of data and task parameters (e.g. unexpected zero values). There's not enough information in your post to say specifically what is happening and there are no known open issues. Could you upload a sample FITS file and the parameters you used (e.g. "cl\$this->_split2($m[0]) dpar daofind") to the anonymous ftp at ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub so I can try to reproduce the problem? It would also help to know whether you are using the 32-bit or 64-bit IRAF version (i.e. the 'linux' or 'linux64' architecture).

Note also that DS9 versions 7.1 and later have issues related to properly reading image cursors, this has been recently fixed in the newest beta version. I mention this because an improper cursor position may be contributing to the problem.

Hello (Mike?),
The problem has been solved. I uninstalled v 2.16 and installed v 2.15, and now I can run ds9 and iraf properly. Thanks for your help anyway!
(Is there something wrong with the install script of v 2.16? I actually tried a lot of times but I never installed v 2.16 successfully...It seems that the symlinks were never built up successfully, whether I used the new install script or /unix/hlib/install.old)

Sorry, I think it is just my unfamiliar with linux that caused those problems...
Please ignore those questions.
