I have a ~2.6GB fits file with extensions, and I'm getting a 'Cannot open file' error message when I try to do something as simple as imhe. Is this file too large?

If you're running a 32-bit IRAF architecture then, yes, the limit on file size is 2GB. On 64-bit platforms some packages (e.g. STSDAS/TABLES) are still limited to 32-bit only but core tasks like IMHEAD should work. Otherwise, make sure the file isn't corrupted, e.g. does a non-IRAF task read all the extensions correctly?

Ok, well drat. I'm running 32-bit. I'll just have to choose smaller file sizes for now. Do you know of any non-IRAF tools that can chop these larger files into smaller pieces?
