Hi,
I am trying to run the task ngaussfit on my mac osx 10.8.5 but it seems not to work. After I launch the task,
I can see the the spectrum on the graphic window (together with a tentative fit below).
However, if I try to change the graph window with wt, wb, and so on, I get weird scalings of the x and y axes and the spectrum is no longer visible. The command "s s" to define the sample range does not work. I am stuck here and can not go further trying to fit my emission features.
Any idea of what is going on?
Thanks!
Francesca

The answer may depend on what version of IRAF and STSDAS you use, and on which platform. STSDAS is 32-bit only but on recent Mac hardware you're likely running the 64-bit IRAF. At one point there was a graphics incompatibility between the 32-bit apps and the 64-bit version of the CL that is used to render the graphics and read the cursor. The workaround is to install a 32-bit version of the CL (i.e. the cl.e, ecl.e and/or vocl.e) binary from ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v216/support/macosx and try again.
If you are using Pyraf or the Ureka distribution then you'll need to contact the STScI helpdesk (help@stsci.edu). I don't see this problem using XGterm and the latest IRAF v2.16.1 and STSDAS 3.17.

Hi,
I have copied the binary files cl.e, ecl.e and vocl.e into the iraf/bin.macintel directory as suggested.
However, when I type "cl" to start iraf again, I get the message
/iraf/bin.macintel/vocl.e: Permission denied
My iraf version is:
PC-IRAF Revision 2.16 EXPORT Thu May 24 15:41:17 MST 2012

Be sure to make the new binaries executable, e.g.
% cd /iraf/bin.macintel ; chmod 755 *cl.e
Another possible issue is that the 32-bit binaries were built for both ppc and intel architectures and ppc is no longer supported on some platforms. I've updated the binaries to be single-architecture 32-bit i386 binaries in case this is the problem, try downloading again and make sure they are executable on your end.

Hi,
actually I have just realized that since I have replaced the *cl.e files, splot is no longer working … (it is giving me the same windowing problems that I had with ngaussfit before replacing the *cl.e files).

You should check that you're using the latest version of STSDAS, I believe this problem was fixed, at least for some tasks. If you're running the latest IRAF then a simple "make stsdas" from the iraf$extern directory will install the latest version (assuming you've already run the 'configure' script in there). If you're already running STSDAS v3.17 the you should contact the STScI helpdesk (help@stsci.edu) to see if they have a fix or to suggest they support 64-bit systems. Otherwise, you'll need to switch between CL versions, sorry.
