ds9 suddenly stopped opening for me, it was coming up with some 'conflict' error. So I decided to re-install both IRAF and ds9 to see if that fixed the problem. It didn't.

When I type 'ds9' at an xgterm prompt (via X11) it says:
'Illegal instruction: 4'

Google comes up with no solutions or explanations. So I hope someone here can help.

I'm using OSX (Lion) on a MacBook Pro. It's a 64-bit machine.

Thanks!

The illegal instruction could be due to a binary incompatibility, e.g. you're using a DS9 binary built on 10.8 and not specifically for 10.7. You can get proper binaries from the download site at http://ds9.si.edu. Otherwise I'd suggest you contact the DS9 developers directly at saord@cfa.harvard.edu

Thanks. I've just email them at SAO. If I get any helpful advice I'll be sure to post it here.

BTW, I reinstalled ds9 again, making sure to use the 10.7 version and I now get a 'segmentation fault: 11' error.

Never heard back from SAO guys. Tried installing ds9 again, this time it came up with a different error along the lines of "Tcl probably not installed correctly". I googled this and followed suggestion on http://macports.org/ticket/40928, basically:

%sudo port uninstall ds9
% sudo port -s install ds9

Upon trying to start ds9 again it comes up with this error:

Error in startup script: conflicting versions provided for package "msgcat": 1.5.0, then 1.4.2
while executing
"package provide msgcat 1.4.2"
(file "/usr/local/bin/zvfsmntpt/tcl8/8.5/msgcat-1.4.2.tm" line 18)
invoked from within
"source $ds9(root)/tcl8/8.5/msgcat-1.4.2.tm"
(file "./zvfsmntpt/src/ds9.tcl" line 41)

Google didn't help here, not sure how to proceed.

I'm going to email SAO again but if anyone knows of a solution I'd appreciate it.

Thanks to Bill at SAO, it turns out to be a very easy fix.

Once you download the software, untar and unzip it, then move those files (without further unzipping of any other files) to required location. Then it should work.

FYI: I'm using a MacBook Pro 10.7.5. I downloaded the X11 version of ds9 from SAO's website. Once I untar'd and unzipped the file I moved it to /usr/local/bin. Then typed 'ds9' at the prompt and voila!

Ticket resolved.
