Hi,
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and followed these instructions to install IRAF on a new computer:
http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~khan/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installation
I have an older computer on which I used these instructions instead:
https://docs.astro.columbia.edu/attachment/wiki/IRAF/iraf-64-bit_step_by_step_installation
which included creating that IRAF maintenance account, etc.
I would like to upgrade this installation of IRAF by using the other instructions (those at the Ohio State site). What would be the best way to do this? Uninstall the current IRAF first? If so, how do I actually do that?
Thanks,
Ivan

A detailed answer would depend on what version you are currently running, but in general v2.16.1 should be installed as if it were a new release. If you're running v2.16 then you can simply untar the new distribution over the current installation and reinstall the external packages (see the README file), for earlier releases you can run the $iraf/unix/hlib/uninstall script to remove system links that were made and then delete the iraf root tree before unpacking in the same directory.
Note that with v2.16.1 you no longer need root permissions to do the installation, and an 'iraf' account is not necessary either. If you've made local changes (e.g. added a printer or tape drive definition) then be sure to save those changes before deleting anything. If you have problems or questions post back.
