Hello,
I am trying to do a new install of IRAF on OS X Mavericks 10.9.4. I'm running tcsh and in my .cshrc file have set:
PHP Formatted Code setenv iraf /iraf /iraf /
setenv IRAFARCH macintel
When I untar the IRAF 2.16.1 release in /iraf/iraf/, it reports an error at
PHP Formatted Code x pkg /images /tv /tvmark /mktools .x : (Empty error message )
tar : Error exit delayed from previous errors .
Not knowing what this means, I tried running
PHP Formatted Code sudo ./install --system
And it yells at me
PHP Formatted Code Error : Cannot determine platform architecture , quitting .
: Try setting a $iraf or $IRAFARCH variable .
As I said, these are set in my .cshrc file, and I've also tried defining them at the prompt before running ./install, but to no avail. Can you give me insight into what my problem might be? Thank you!

The error from untarring may indicate the tarball is corrupt or incomplete, you should double check that you downloaded in binary mode and get the file again if needed.
The install script is actually a Bash script and so won't pick up definitions from your .login/.cshrc. Since you're doing a system install anyway you can run the old C-shell installer by doing
% sudo $iraf/unix/hlib/install.csh
or else add the following to your .bashrc/.bashrc_profile
export iraf=/iraf/iraf/
export IRAFARCH=macintel
As to why it's not determining your architecture correctly, be sure that the "uname -m" command at the unix prompt returns x86_64 to indicate you're using a 64-bit machine, otherwise the appropriate architecture is 'macosx'.

It evidently was corrupted. I downloaded it again and it worked properly this time around. I should have thought of that. Thank you for your help, and I apologize for the simple problem!
