I am sorry, my previous post got all messed up, and I cannot edit it anymore, so I'll clarify my question
I am using IRAF v2.15.1a, I should be able to call the cl program from the shell. However running 'cl -old PHP Formatted Code
imstat dev $pix
logout
does not work, and the following shell prompt is left with the characters ";24;80".
Without the -old option, the command enters an infinite loop. The same happens with newer versions of IRAF (e.g. 2.16.1), because essentially I think the -old option has no effect.
What am I doing wrong?

I think there is some kind of security mechanism that somehow prevents my messages from being displayed correctly.. the command I want to give to the shell is
PHP Formatted Code % cl -old "`less than` sign" prog .cl
anyway, it's the "second case", in the "Unix C-shell scripts" question at the link I gave above..
