HI:

I already have installed xgterm and ximtool in ubuntu, but I cannot open it:

aguado@aguado-asus:~$ xgterm
bash: /usr/local/bin/xgterm: cannot execute binary file

I have installed in this way:

http://www.astronomy.ohio-state.edu/~khan/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installation_64bit

The files are unpack but I dont know how to use it.

Thanks

The X11IRAF binaries are (and will remain) 32-bit, but recent versions of Ubuntu (and others) either don't provide the compatibility libs by default or else make it difficult to find. Depending on the version of Ubuntu you have you can try doing

% sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

to install the compatibility libs, but this is probably a longshot. Alternatively, you can get statically linked binaries from

ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub/fitz/xgterm.STATIC
ftp://iraf.noao.edu/pub/fitz/ximtool.STATIC

Download in binary mode, make sure they're executable, and then manually copy to e.g. /usr/local/bin/xgterm.

Thanl you very much

I am not sure about what a statically linked binaries are. I have download both and move directly to /usr/local/bin/

Now I try to open the files and:

aguado@aguado-asus:/usr/local/bin$ xgterm.STATIC
bash: /usr/local/bin/xgterm.STATIC: Permission denied
aguado@aguado-asus:/usr/local/bin$ sudo xgterm.STATIC
[sudo] password for aguado:
sudo: xgterm.STATIC: command not found

If I ask:

aguado@aguado-asus:/usr/local/bin$ file xgterm.STATIC
aguado@aguado-asus:/usr/local/bin$ xgterm.STATIC: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, not stripped

is it correct? How I can use the link?

Thanks a lot

Make them executable and move to /usr/local/bin with the commands

% chmod 755 /path/xgterm.STATIC
% sudo mv /path//xgterm.STATIC /usr/local/bin/xgterm

and likewise for ximtool.
