Hi, I'm completely new to IRAF but this problem has been confusing me for a long time. I'm using OSX 10.9 system on my MacBook Pro and just get IRAF installed. But when I "display" a FITS file and used the "imexam" command to produce the radial profile (+r) or contour map (+e), for example, I got either ERROR "floating point invalid operations" or simply some strange plots (scattered points for "r" and a messy field for "m"). Very strangely, if I opened the FITS file first with command "ds9 ch1.FITS &", and then started IRAF, and then used same "imexam+r/e", I got correct plots. However, in the way, I can't do things like DAOFIND when performing PSF fitting without closing the DS9 first.

This is a really strange problem. I actually ran into the same bug when I ran IRAF in Ubuntu on my old ThinkPad. So I'm guessing if something went wrong during installation.

I can barely perform APPHOT by opening the image with DS9 first. But when I come to DAOPHOT, things get unbearable. So I beg your help to solve this problem so that I can use IRAF normally.

Thank you so much!!!

Jason

Be sure you are not using DS9 v7.2, it is known to be broken wrt to cursor reads and could explain what you are seeing. Otherwise, what version of IRAF is this?

Thank you so much, fitz! I was actually running DS9 v7.2. I have switched to v7.1 and it works well. However, there are still some problems when I do DAOPHOT. If I leave DS9 open and run daofind or psf or allstar, I get "Error: segmentation violation". I have to close DS9 in order to make these commands work.

Do you have an idea why is that? I really appreciate it!

You didn't mention which IRAF version this is, but another user reporting the same problem says that setting the daophot.text package parameter to 'yes' fixed the problem for him. You can set this explicitly using

cl\$this->_split2($m[0]) daophot.text = "yes"

or by simply unlearning the DAOPHOT package.
