Hi

I've come across something strange - when I load iraf 2.16 under 64-bit linux without much else open, I get the usual "Initializing SAMP .... No Hub Available" message and then get the "vocl\$this->_split2($m[0])" prompt immediately. No problem there.

If however I close iraf, then run aladin in standalone mode from the terminal with "javaws aladin.jnlp" (using 64-bit java : Java(TM) Web Start 10.40.2.43-fcs from java version 1.7.0_40) and then try and load iraf, I get "Initializing SAMP ...." which just hangs indefinately.

If I kill the xgterm and then use iraf 2.16 under 32-bit linux (login.cl is on the same nfs shared disk), I get "Initializing SAMP .... on" and then get the "vocl\$this->_split2($m[0])" prompt immediately.

Is this a 64-bit bug?

Cheers
Paul.

It sounds more to me like the socket connecting to the Hub isn't ready for some reason, e.g. the Aladin initialization isn't complete when you then start the CL, or the Aladn doesn't come up with SAMP enabled in the first place. Since the CL is making a client connection the fact you started iraf before Aladin and got the normal "No Hub" message shouldn't matter, and the fact you later start a 32-bit CL may just mean that the delay allowed the Hub to initialize: The real test is whether you can reproduce the problem using just the start-aladin-then-start-iraf sequence.

Can you ever get the 64-bit IRAF to connect to a Hub (e.g. one from Topcat, or after waiting for Aladin and/or manually turning on SAMP) or is it only in this particular sequence that there is a problem? Also, what version of Aladin are you using?

\$this->_split2($m[0]) Can you ever get the 64-bit IRAF to connect to a Hub

no I can't.

with topcat (using topcat-lite from http://www.star.bris.ac.uk/~mbt/topcat/#webstart4.0-1) already running, when I start iraf under 64-bit it just sits there with "Initializing SAMP ....". A small grey box appears in the topcat samp clients box and nothing else happens.

with aladin (v7.5) already running and then starting iraf under 64-bit, I also get the "Initializing SAMP ...." message and nothing else happens.

when I leave either topcat or aladin running and then start iraf under 32-bit, I get "Initializing SAMP .... on" immediately.

If I use starlink gaia I can push images over to aladin with no problem, so samp must be working at some level...

Cheers
Paul.

I believe this has already been fixed in the dev system, you can get a patched VOCL binary from

ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v216/support/linux64/vocl.e

Let me know if that doesn't fix the problem.

Hi

Many thanks: the replacement vocl.e file works fine.

For reference: in topcat, the small grey box previously mentioned now changes to a 5-pointed blue-coloured iraf star symbol after ~5 seconds.

Cheers
Paul.

Hi, I have the same error when I try to run "cl" from xgterm.
I recently re-installed IRAF from the Ureka distribution. cl works fine if I run it from the terminal, no error and all packages appropriately loaded, but under xgterm or xterm I get

"Initializing SAMP .... No Hub Available"

and not all packages (like Gemini) are not loaded. Then the vocl prompt appears.

Any patches I can load as well?
Thanks,
Nino

You can try replacing the vocl.e binary as before to fix the SAMP problem. Otherwise check to see whether you have a $iraf defined in your .login/.cshrc file that may be interfering with finding the packages.

I replace the files but I also commented a previous defined $iraf (thanks!).
Now it finds correctly the packages but only if I add in my .tcshrc file the arch definition

setenv IRAFARCH macintel

If I don't do this the "cl" command in the xgterm only produce a prompt (\$this->_split2($m[0])) with no iraf loaded.

Weird....

Thanks.

A "\$this->_split2($m[0])" prompt is what you get from running an IRAF binary directly, e.g. iraf$bin/x_system.e. You can type '?' to get a list of tasks and figure out which binary, if it is a package list then it is a CL (type "bye" to exit, or let me know if that doesn't work).

Otherwise try "which cl" outside of IRAF to see what command is being used. This is likely a symlink so then do a "ls -l /path/cl" to see what it points to. This should be something like "cl.csh" in the iraf$unix/hlib directory but if it points to 'something.e' try rerunning the install script. Setting IRAFARCH is done automatically in the CL startup script, my guess is there is still some confusion over what might be defined in your .tcshrc and what gets set in the ureka environment.

Thanks a lot. I indeed fix that and now I don't have any error message under cl inside the xgterm.
