I am having problems with the gemini task gemhedit. Whenever I try to use it, I get: 1) if I try to add an keyword:
_______________________________
ERROR: Cannot open file (NULL)
"delete-, verify-, show-)"
line 68: gemtools$gemhedit.cl
called as: `gemhedit (image=teste.fits[0])'
_______________________________
2) if I try to update a keyword:
_______________________________ERROR: Cannot open file (NULL)
"verify-, show-)"
line 55: gemtools$gemhedit.cl
called as: `gemhedit (image=teste.fits[0])'
________________________________I am using IRAF 2.14.1 on ubuntu 9.04. with extern packages from iraf.netAny ideas?

So, inspecting the lines in gemhedit.cl where the errors occur, it seems that the culprit is a call to nhedit specifying "NULL" as the command file.
It seems that here "NULL" is being interpreted as an actual file name, hence the error. Any ideas why "NULL" is being misinterpreted here?

The task is expecting to use the "old" NHEDIT task from the FITSUTIL package which is different from the one installed in the core system now. Just load FITSUTIL again so it is the topmost package.

The only nhedit task that seems to be installed is from images.imutil. There's no nhedit in fitsutil. I got the later from irafnet (fitsutil-src.tar.gz, plus the linux bin files.) So, loading fitsutil do not solves the problem. I am actually trying to run mireduce on some T-ReCs files. Editing gemhedit.cl and tprepare.cl by hand (removing the offending part of the nhedit call) solves this first problem, but then everything stops at mistack just after a call to imcombine. No error message is issued, and the command never returns no matter how long I wait, as if it is waiting for something that never happens. It seems that it is a call to wmef that never returns. So far, no idea why.

I just got the FITSUTIL tarball from the irafnet site and it indeed does have an NHEDIT task. An older version is also available from ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/extern/fitsutil.tar.Z I'd suggest you reinstall the package.I haven't got any idea why the task then appears to hang. For script tasks you can issue a 'd_trace' before running the script to have it print out what it's doing.

User carvano is correct. The fitsutil-src.tar.gz file that someone would download if trying to download the v2.14 external packages (or just from the current download location) does NOT have nhedit. I then looked to the gmisc package obtained from the same location and nhedit has not yet been moved there either. It seems that "old nhedit" can only be obtained from the alternate link provided by Mike. This is very confusing having fitsutil change in the middle of the v2.14.1 life cycle. But more confusing is that the fitsutil and the gmisc downloads are not "compatible": if nhedit is taken out of fitsutil, then one should be able to expect to find it in gmisc, according to what I've told about the plan anyway.(Back in July, the fitsutil from the standard location was still the "old" fitsutil. When was the source updated?)To user carvano, many apologies. We, at Gemini, were totally unaware of the changes to fitsutil until I saw this post a week ago. Kathleen

[/quote:7aa6f2187b]The whole point of external packages is that they have a development schedule and release cycle all their own (after all, GEMINI was updated in the middle of the v2.14.1 lifecycle as well). While we try to keep dependencies in mind (e.g. preserving the old nhedit task by moving it to GMISC), packages will evolve as needed. If the GEMINI package has specific version requirements, those downloads should be maintained along with the GEMINI package on a Gemini site so users aren't confused by directions to get a package from a second source. Better yet is to include required code into the package directly and avoid dependencies where possible.I'll tell you now that when I get around to revising the downloads area of iraf.net in the coming weeks, it will be all the new versions. Obsoleted packages won't be available here but will still be available from the ftp archive on iraf.noao.edu. Adjust your page links accordingly when the time comes.
