Hello,
I have encountered a problem where xgterm does not appear to be
working correctly on my machine. I will attempt to describe my
installation procedure along with some hardware specs and output.Machine is an Intel QuadCore, running a 64-bit architecture!
Running Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit.For the most part I've followed this guide
http://geco.phys.columbia.edu/~rubab/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installation
except for the parts where it said to install IB and NB using RedHat
Binaries instead of Linux binaries, I've installed IRAF using
http://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/ftp/iraf/v214/PCIX/ib.lnux.x86.gz and
http://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/ftp/iraf/v214/PCIX/nb.lnux.x86.gzThe script said to install X11IRAF using
http://iraf.noao.edu/x11iraf/x11iraf-v2.0BETA-bin.redhat.tar.gz and so
I did the 1st time around, later realizing that I should have chosen
the Linux package instead I went to cd x11iraf/ and removed
everything, downloaded the right package
http://iraf.noao.edu/projects/x11iraf/x11iraf-v2.0BETA-bin.linux.tar.gz
and installed it. Logged into IRAF, went to images then plot then
typed contour and selected an image, the output was in other words
giberish, and no xgterm window with the image popped out.I was wondering if you could help me track down the problem, whether
it's a problem with my packages from which I installed, or it's a
64-bit problem with xgterm, or something else.Thank YouLab Aid

Garbage on the screen always means you are either not using a graphics terminal (XGterm or Xterm), or you set the wrong terminal type when you did the MKIRAF.
