Has anyone made the switch to OSX 10.6 yet? I suspect that my computer is plagued by some memory issues that 10.6 is purported to fix and am eager to upgrade (for once). I know the original Leopard has some X11 issues, so I asked my university's IT department to include it in the testing before they give everyone here the go-ahead to upgrade. They told me they won't, and I should "contact the vendor" of the programs I really care about. That would be IRAF. Are things generally okay?

From all (early) reports, IRAF/XGterm/XImtool all work fine under Snow Leopard. As with any OS upgrade that overwrites the system directories (specifically, /usr/include and perhaps the /usr/local.bin) you will need to re-run the IRAF install scrinpt to reset the critical system links.-Mike

I have made the switch to Snow Leopard and everything works perfectly. I just made sure that i do a clean install and re-install all of the IRAF software from macsingularity.com website. I have been using IRAF in snow leopard since last week and I see no errors. Hope this helps!

I'm working with a post-docs who has data that she wants to cross-correlate with XCSAO on her Mac with Snow Leopard and SciSoft IRAF. After we realized that we had to separately install the gcc compiler, we got the package to compile, but it doesn't link. It seems that some of the IRAF system libraries cannot be found, despite their being in the appropriate (relative) location. Do you have any ideas what we can do to get this to work? Should I have her install IRAF from NOAO directly? -Doug

It turns out that Snow Leopard defaults to 64-bits and you need to add the -m32 flag to hlib$fc.csh and hlib$mkpkg.incjust like you have to for 64-bit Linux:In fc.csh:After this:
# Scan the argument list and concatenate all arguments.
set args = ""
while ("$1" != "")
set args = "$args $1"
shift
endAdd this:
if ($MACH == "macintel") then
print ("MACINTEL: -m32 flag set")
set args = "$args -m32"
endifin mkpkg.inc:
$else $ifeq (MACH, macintel) then
$set XFLAGS = "-c -w -m32" # default XC compile flags
$set XVFLAGS = "-c -w" # VOPS XC compile flags
$set LFLAGS = "-Nz -m32" # default XC link flags
