Hi allThis is my third Q. The reason for so many Q in one day is because I have finaly reached a point where spending all day searching for answers does not get me anywhere.I want to develope a photometry package for my telescope, using Iraf scripts inside a FC4 environment. I started using Linux for the first time at the beginning of the year. I started using the Scisoft distributed package of iraf, but had some problems. I thus downloaded and installed my own Iraf system. I am currently running Iraf V2.12.2a and X11iraf V1.3.1, and is using DS9 as a display application. I am teaching myself Iraf using the tutorials and manuals available online. It would go much faster if I didn't hit a snag every week. At this stage I am trying to set up my Iraf system so that I can use it without errors. The current error that is holding me back for the past month or so is that I can't seem to be able to plot fits from inside Iraf. I can display from inside Iraf using DS9 as a tool, no problem. But when I want to plot a contour for example it gives me the followingcl> contour im010
Image will be block averaged by 7 in x and 7 in y
server # XGTERM.GUI -- Default GUI for Xgterm, providing a standard graphics terminal

Since you're seeing the GUI code and graphics metacode it means your IRAF stdgraph is set to 'xgterm', but you are using some other kind of window. If you're using an Xterm window you'll need to reset the iraf device appropriately, e.g.[code:1:234b0c41ec]
cl> stty xtermjh
[/code:1:234b0c41ec]or do a new MKIRAF and answer 'xtermjh' when asked for the terminal type. (The 'xtermjh' is just an xterm setting that puts the status line text on the text window instead of scrolling over the graphics as the plain 'xterm' does).Note that terminals on the typical linux desktop such as rxvt, gnome-terminal, kterm, etc do not support graphics and cannot be used. Since you say you're using X11IRAF then simply starting an XGterm and logging into iraf from there is sufficient.-Mike

I am having the exact same problem, with the exact same output as FSBoyden, but changing the terminal type to xtermjh does not fix my problem. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and installed Ureka to get iraf. I am also using DS9 to display my images. In addition, I get similar problems with surface and implot, but there are so many of those wild lines that I cannot scroll up to see what errors are above them.

What should I do to try to fix this?

Thanks!

Setting the terminal type in iraf to 'xgterm' or 'xtermjh' only works if you are actually running an XGterm or XTerm (respectively) window. Terminal apps like gnome-terminal, rxvt, etc that might appear from desktop menus do not support graphics. XTerm should come with the system by default, so in the terminal you have open type 'xterm &' to start it, then login through that new window using the 'xtermjh' setting. If you want to use XGterm you'll need to start it by typing 'xgterm' and using 'xgterm' as the terminal type when you do a MKIRAF. If XGterm doesn't come with ureka you can get it from
