I'm about to start reducing my data. Do I need to make a copy of the files first before I do anything to them or is step one simply to combine and subtract the bias frames??Thanks!

If you're talking about CCDPROC (or most other tasks for that matter), you can simply specify a different output filename and you won't overwrite the input file. Any task which has an 'output' parameter will only read the 'input' file, unless the filename is the same in which case it generaly makes a copy and replaces the original when the task completes.
