Dear IRAF team,
I would like to convert a 1D spectrum from fits or imh to a postscript or
encapsuled image. When I use the "export" command, it saves the 2D image
of the specrum (i.e. a line of pixels in a frame). Could you tell me
please whether there is a way to do this?
Thank you.
Jihane Moultaka.

Jihane,
I assume what you want is a PS file of a plot of the spectrum? The first step is to generate the plot using something like SPLOT, PROW, GRAPH or a number of others. See the helps pages for these tasks by entering the task name in the search bar on the banner, or do an 'apropos' search on a string like "plot" or "spectrum". Once you have a graph generating the PS is easy. This is summarized well in https://iraf.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=83718&highlight=psdump
which also has a link to the FAQ. Hope this helps.Cheers,
-Mike

That link doesn't seem to point anywhere -- I get "The topic or post you requested does not exist". (The URL is also missing the initial "h", but that's easily fixed.)A related question: is there a way to specify the output name of the PostScript or EPS file generated by the usual "device=eps" method, or are you stuck hunting for "sgiXXXX.eps", where XXXX is some kind of process id (effectively a random number)?cheers,Peter
