I'm having two problems installing tfinder on my G5 Mac.The first is that when I tar -xvf the finder-bin.macosx.tar file the only
thing it installs in the bin.macosx directory is "OBJS.arc.Z"---there does
not seem to be a x_finder.e
The result is that if I try to run "tfinder" I get the error message that it
can't find the excecutable. Fair enough. So, I decided that there was something wrong with finder-bi.macosx.tar
file, and decided to try a source installation, followng the instructions in
finder.readme. That also got me nowhere fast:so> mkpkg -p finder -p tables generic
/bin/bash: line 1: host//mkfloat.csh: No such file or directorythanks,
phil Cry

/bin/bash: line 1: host//mkfloat.csh: No such file or directory [/quote:6f414cbd07]This messages usually means the 'bin' in the package is a directory and not a symlink (something that can happen if you 'cp' to move the dir). I'll add a more helpful error message to the code.Cheers,
-Mike

Ok, thanks!I'm still not sure what the mkpkg problem was, though: "bin" is a symbolic

OK, here is a new issue. I tried to make a new index using mkgscindex when I was logged in as
"iraf":set gscnorth=/Volumes/USA_AURA_STSI_GSC1_1001/mkgscindex
fi> mkgscindex
GSC index FITS file (/cdrom0/tables/regions.tbl): gscnorth$tables/regions.tbl
output table root pathname (finder$lib/index):
Fits_file IRAFNAME Dimensions BP DATE OBJECT
gscnorth$tables/ finder$lib/index.fi 8 01/06/89
regions.tbl ts So far, so good...except that when I go to run tfinder, it tells me that
Searching the Guide Star Catalog index...
ERROR on line 272: Table `/iraf/extern/finder/lib/index.tab' does not exist or cannot be opened.
tfinder ()
Sure enough, what happened was that mkgscindex created a file called
index.fits, not index.tbl. Now what?thanks,
phil

Try running MKGSCINDEX with an explicit ".tab" on the output filename. Just a guess, Rob might have a comment as well.-Mike

No, I tried that, but it still insists in turning it into a file with a ".fits"
extension. Rob---any advice? When I do try running tfinder with various versions of the index, I get
the dreaded:
Reading the Guide Star Catalog regions:
gscnorth$gsc/n4500/3460.gsc
ERROR on line 272: Parameter not a legal character constant (datatype)error message someone else was commenting on recently.

Hi Phil,The mkgscindex task uses strfits. Am wondering if this is picking up on imtype. Do you have imtype set to "fits"? Also, if this is a new installation, an unlearn strfits probably won't help - but won't hurt, either.> ERROR on line 272: Parameter not a legal character constant (datatype)On the other hand, this is coming from cdrfits. The parameter is question is not used by tfinder, but is rather hardwired to a null string. Try an "unlearn cdrfits" - this won't work, but try it anyway. Then edit the tfinder.cl file and delete the datatype="" specification from the cdrfits command line.Rob

Unfortunately, unlearning strfits didn't help. And, I get the same behavior whether imtype is set to ".fits" or to ".imh".

Have fixed issues with mkgscindex and tfinder. Corrected version is available from http://iraf.noao.edu/scripts/extern/finder.pl in finder.tar.gz. V2.2.1Rob Seaman
