IRAF 30th Anniversary

This year marks 30 years since the first public release of IRAF (on magtape) to a handful of lucky sites. Since then, more than 100 external packages have been developed and the latest release is in use by more than 5000 users in >60 countries around the world. On average, somebody somewhere in the world starts up the CL every 15 seconds of every day.

Although active development has ramped down considerably in recent years, use of IRAF remains heavy and continues to enable science by the community to the tune of ~800 journal papers/year. We would appreciate hearing your experiences/remembrances of IRAF in the comments section below.

I cannot launch IRAF but the message I get from the IRAF install program says it was successfully installed. Does anyone know why I cannot launch it? I apologize for the lengthy description to follow but I think it is necessary to determine what the cause of the problem.

I have a Dell Inspiron I bought last year, Intel Core i3 7th Generation. It is a 64 bit machine, or at least that was what the sales tag said, and if I interpret correctly the specifications I just go from Dell correctly it is a 64 bit. I installed Ubuntu 16.04.t LTS which has Linux 4.4.0-78-Generic x86_64. The Ubuntu install file was ubuntu-16.04.2-server-amd64.iso. This indicates it is for an amd machine, but it is also supposed to be for an intel machine. I need to point out that my knowledge of Linux is very rudimentary.

The installed program I ran is iraf.lnux.x86_64.tar.gz. The install program said:
Congratulations! IRAF has been successfully installed on this system.

The install program then said:
To begin using IRAF you can simply type
% source ~/.login
% cl

However, when I executed the first line, i.e. source ~/.login, it came back and said:
-bash: /home/stanlepast/.login: line 6: syntax error: unexpected end of file.

The .login file has the following statement:
# add iraf setup commands
if ( -e /home/stanlepast/.iraf/setup.csh) then
source /home/stanlepast/.iraf/setup.csh
endif

The first line in .login is a blank line and so the sixth line is after endif.

The README.install document gives a different method of launching IRAF. It says to enter the following commands:
% cl
% iraf

When I execute 'cl' it comes back with the following message:
c-launch.sh 4.1.4
The numbers 4.1.4 sounds suspiciously like the version of Linux.

When I execute 'iraf' it comes back with the following message:
iraf: command not found.

As I said, I know very little about Linux. There are two command prompts, one with the tilde character and one without:
stanlepast@Blue-Hills:~$
and
stanlepast@Blue-Hills:/$
The 'cd /' command is supposed to take me to the home directory and it takes me to the one without the tilde character. I ran the IRAF install program in this directory and in a folder called iraf.v2161. README.install said to create a folder with this name. I get the same messages if I execute
% cl
% iraf
in the directory that has a prompt with the tilde character or the one without the tilde character. When I execute these statements in the directory that has the prompt without the tilde character, I execute them in the iraf.v2161 folder.

Do you have any idea why I cannot launch IRAF? I had posted this question in one of the Linux discussion groups. The one and only person who responded said:
"It seems to assume that you are using a C based shell, usually tcsh. That
has different syntax than bash. Depending upon your distribution, you
should be able to install csh or tcsh, then change to that shell to run it."

I just discovered I submitted my problem under the wrong subject title. Please excuse the duplication.

Hello,
I wish to process longslit images up to and including spectra extraction. It appears from my reading that when flat correcting object spectra the flat lamp spectrum needs to first be removed from that flat lamp (with the response task) if variance weighting or the clean option is to be used during extraction.
Can someone please advise if this is so?
Regards,
Patrick.
  • Cannot install iraf on Mac

Dear all,
When I try to install iraf (2.17) on my MacBook M1, I run into the following error during the " make sysgen 2>&1 | tee build.log":

mv: rename f2c to ../../bin/f2c.e: Not a directory
make: *** [sysgen] Error 1

Could someone help me understand what is the problem and how to fix it? Thank you in advance

Hello
How can I define the binning in the apall task for long slit spectra? The seeing is about 3 pixels.

I have an exceptionally weird situation. I am running on ubuntu 20.04 with iraf 2.17
I have some fits files of data taken a few years ago.
These files contain spectra, I can list the headers of all the files together, with a wild card. I can do an imstat on the files with results, with a wild card. BUT, I am unable to do an implot or splot on an individual file. Now here is the weird part. These difficulties only are when I have loaded the apextract package. Otherwise these problems do not exist. i would include a screenshot, but I do not see how.
