VO News

Who thought you could do so much with CL scripts? WCSFixer is a new NVO application developed entirely in CL scripts but with a rich web interface. With the flip of a parameter these same scripts can be used in the CL on your desktop. This and other new services are being demonstrated this week at the NVO booth at the AAS (or see the NVO homepage.

There is no magic to how this task works as a web application, and no need for tricky AJAX interfaces or "modern" languages like Java. The page is a standard CGI POST form that invokes a shell script on the server. This scripts starts a #!cl script to call the IRAF task and a single parameter toggles whether the output is formatted for the desktop or web page. Embedded javascript drives the user interface as the task executes (i.e. the results panel is the script output formatted as HTML but with JS code to load plots etc into the iframes on the page). See the help page for more information or comment here. Suggestions for additionals tasks that should get this treatment are welcome.

The thrust of the NVO/IRAF development work has been on providing SOAP/WSDL web-service interfaces to IRAF tasks. A method for generating these automatically was completed last year and the first round of task services will be announced shortly. This spring will focus on client-side VO development in IRAF.
